Western Dubuque and Black Hawk Claim State Football Crowns

Western Dubuque State Football Champs

At the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls last night, the season ended in perfection for the Western Dubuque High School Football team claiming the Class 3-A State title over Solon 37-17 and finishing with an unblemished 13-0 record.

It couldn’t have been a better start for the Solon, going up 7-0 in the first quarter following a defensive hold and a Bobcat fumbled punt. The rest was all Western Dubuque, who rolled to their second state championship in program history, the first since 2001.

Calvin Harris threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns for Western Dubuque while teammate Ben Bryant rushed for two touchdowns on 39 yards rushing.

Wide receiver Will Burds finished with a game high 128 receiving yards, which included a 70-yard touchdown reception.

The Epworth Fire Department met the team and escorted them through town as they came back in the early morning hours.
