Wahlert Tops Register’s All-Sports Standings

A Dubuque high school’s success across its sports program has been noticed by Iowa’s newspaper of record. The Des Moines Register released its annual All-Sports Standings this week, and Wahlert topped the “medium school” rankings. The standings take into account a school’s success across its entire athletic department, including both boys and girls teams. Wahlert amassed 56 total points, based on its teams’ finishes in state-level competitions. That was enough to edge second-place Pella, which had 54.5 points. Wahlert won state championships in girls cross country, volleyball, wrestling, and boys tennis in the past school year.

Among large schools, both of Dubuque’s public high schools finished in the Register’s top 20. Hempstead’s teams earned 23.5 points to place 14th in the big school rankings, while Senior’s 19 points landed the Rams in 18th. Waukee was the top finisher with 85.5 points.

In the small school division, Cascade was the top area finisher, earning 26.5 points to tie with Carroll Kuemper for 9th place. The Cougars were boosted by state championships in both boys and girls basketball. Iowa City Regina, which like Cascade is a member of the River Valley Conference, was tops among the small schools with 46.5 points.
