Voting For New Jail in Delaware County

Voters in Delaware County are again being asked to approve a bond referendum for a new jail and sheriff’s office. The 5.9 million dollar bond issue would replace the old jail, which was built in 1967. County leaders say that is in bad shape, and if a new jail isn’t built soon, the state will shut the old one down, which could result in the loss of jobs. Right now the jail can only house about a dozen inmates. When overcrowding occurs some inmates have to be transported to other jails in nearby counties. The new jail would house nearly 40 inmates. If approved the project would be financed over a 12 year period and the supervisors would not have to increase the debt levy. Polls opened at 7 this morning and will close at 8 tonight.
