UPDATE: Structure Explosion On Loras Blvd.

Fire crews, emergency personnel and police remain on the scene of a structure that was leveled by an explosion in the 400 block of Loras Blvd. late this afternoon. The area is blocked off from motorists and people are being told to stay away from the area. It started with a large gas leak caused by a construction crew that hit a gas main that was reported at around 4:15 this afternoon. The explosion happened at around 5:45 and was so powerful it could be felt inside dorm room at Loras College. It also shook and damaged nearby structures. Fire crews were inspecting other buildings in the area for damage. One home was evacuated when the gas leak was first reported.  One fire fighter suffered a non-life threatening injury. Dubuque public information officer Randy Gehl says people who were displaced by the explosion are being asked to go to Jackson Park, where volunteers with the American Red Cross will assist them. It’s not known how long the area will be sealed off.
