UnityPoint-Finley Sleep Center

If you are tired of being tired, you are not alone. The Center of Disease Control has labeled sleep deprivation a public health epidemic-with over 70 million adults suffering from a sleep disorder. Melissa Walsh, Clinical Director of the Eastern Iowa Sleep Center, which manages the Finley Sleep Center in Dubuque, says if you are suffering from any number of sleep problems your doctor could refer you for an in-lab or home sleep study. An in-lab sleep study at the Finley Sleep Center usually requires 6 1/2 to 8 1/2 hours in a special room for one, up to three or four nights, where a team of experts monitor your sleep. If your sleep problems are not serious enough to be referred for a study, there are some easy steps to help sleep better. Walsh says the blue light that’s emitted from electronic screens can delay the release of sleep-inducing melatonin. Naps can help with daytime drowsiness, but make sure they are not too long, 10 to 20 minutes work best. For more information about the Finley Sleep Center and sleep disorders, visit www.unitypoint.org and click on the services tab.
