Transportation Director Likes Seat Belts

The transportation director for the Dubuque Community School District is OK with new rules adopted by the Iowa State Board of Education. One of the rules would require lap-shoulder seat belts on all new buses bought by districts and state-accredited non-public schools. Director Ernie Bolibaugh says anything they can do to improve the safety of kids on school buses is a good thing. In all, the district ordered eight new buses this year. Under the rules, districts wouldn’t have to retrofit their current fleets. The Dubuque district currently has 80 buses. A seat belt policy has been adopted by the school board that makes it mandatory for all students to wear the seat belts. Bolibaugh says they are in the process of sending out notifications to parents and guardians about the policy. Right now, the new rules don’t mandate that all districts have seat belts on their buses, but that could change when the Iowa legislature reconvenes in January.
