Time To Sign Up For LIHEAP

Elderly and disabled residents in Dubuque, Jackson, Jones and Delaware counties can now sign up for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program. The program helps people pay a portion of their utility bill. For years, the program was administered through Operation New View, but because of a recent merger with Hawkeye Area Community Action Program, or HACAP, the LIHEAP program is now being handled by HACAP, which is based in Hiawatha. HACAP communications and volunteers manager Chris Ackman says people will still be able to apply for the program where they have in the past, but because of COVID-19, applications will have to be downloaded at hacap.org. When an application is turned in, it must be accompanied with copies of social security cards for everyone in your household as well as copies of utility bills and proof of income. If you don’t have access to a computer, you can call HACAP. Ackman says after November 1st, all other households can apply for LIHEAP through April 30th.
