The Associated Press men’s basketball poll already has had five different No. 1 teams, a record before New Year’s Day. There could be a sixth when the new poll is released on Monday.
Jermaine Samuels capped his 15-point performance by nailing a go-ahead, 3-pointer with 20.5 seconds left to give 18th-ranked Villanova a 56-55 victory over No. 1 Kansas in Philadelphia. The Jayhawks still had to chances to tie or win the game, but Devon Dotson missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and couldn’t hit a contested layup as time expired.
Dotson had a team-high 15 points for the 9-2 Jayhawks, who were elevated to the top spot last Monday.
In a top-10 matchup, D.J. Carton had 13 points and Kaleb Wesson added 12 before fouling out in fifth-ranked Ohio State’s 71-65 victory against No. 6. Kentucky. Kyle Young finished with 10 points and six assists to help the Buckeyes overcome Nate Sestina’s five 3-pointers and 17 points.
