JaQuan Bailey had 3 1/2 sacks to become the career leader for the Cyclones. He also recovered a fumble after one of his sacks to set up Brock Purdy’s touchdown pass just before halftime. The Cyclones are 1-1. TCU played its first game of coach Gary Patterson’s 20th season. The Horned Frogs weren’t able to play their scheduled nonconference game against SMU after positive COVID-19 tests. TCU had a crowd of 11,852.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Sam Ehlinger hit Joshua Moore on a 12-yard touchdown pass in overtime to send No. 8 Texas to a wild 63-56 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday. The Longhorns rallied with two touchdowns in the final 3 minutes of regulation. Moore also scored with 40 seconds left and Ehlinger’s 2-point conversion pass to Brennan Eagles tied it in regulation. Texas got the ball first in overtime and scored. Texas Tech’s only possession ended with an interception. The Longhorns are 2-0 for the first time under fourth-year coach Tom Herman.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Skylar Thompson passed for 334 yards and ran for three touchdowns, and Kansas State rallied from 21 points down to beat No. 3 Oklahoma 38-35. Freshman Deuce Vaughn caught four passes for 129 yards and ran for a touchdown for the Wildcats, who were coming off a season-opening loss to Arkansas State. Oklahoma freshman Spencer Rattler passed for 387 yards and four touchdowns, but he threw three interceptions.

UNDATED (AP) — The Pirate plundered the defending national champions and Oklahoma got it’s annual faceplant as a big favorite out of the way early. Texas made a wild comeback to keep the Big 12 from going up in flames. College football was batty on Saturday, which for the first time in a season that was never a certainty made things feel normal. The Southeastern Conference kicked off with one of the season’s first stunners. No. 6 LSU got Air Raided by Mississippi State in the debut of Bulldogs coach Mike Leach.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — The Dallas Stars have earned themselves at least two more days in the Edmonton bubble. The Stars have forced a Game 6 in the Stanley Cup finals by getting a goal from Corey Perry in double-overtime to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning, 3-2.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers have powered their way to their first trip to the NBA Finals in a decade. LeBron James posted his 27th triple-double in leading the Lakers to a 117-107 win over the Denver Nuggets in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals. James finished with 38 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists to become the fourth player to reach 10 NBA Finals.

CHICAGO (AP) — Yoan Moncada homered, José Abreu hit a three-run double and the playoff-bound Chicago White Sox beat the NL Central champion Chicago Cubs 9-5 at Guaranteed Rate Field to snap a season-high six-game losing streak Saturday. The Cubs clinched their third division title in five years when the St. Louis Cardinals lost 3-0 to Milwaukee. The White Sox were on their way to a win they sorely needed by then and remained a game behind AL Central leader Minnesota, with the Twins beating Cincinnati. Chicago also took sole possession of second place, with Cleveland losing to Pittsburgh.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Brandon Woodruff allowed two hits in eight innings and the Milwaukee Brewers boosted their playoff prospects in a big way by beating the St. Louis Cardinals 3-0. Ryan Braun and Daniel Vogelbach hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth, the third time the Brewers have hit consecutive homers this season. Woodruff retired 19 straight after pitching around leadoff hits in the first and second. Milwaukee can make the playoffs with a win Sunday, or losses by the Giants and Phillies. The Cardinals need a victory or a Giants loss to clinch a spot and avoid playing a makeup doubleheader Monday in Detroit.

With one day remaining on the regular-season baseball schedule, four teams are still in contention for two available National League playoff spots. The winner of Sunday’s game between the Brewers and Cardinals punches their ticket to the postseason. Both clubs have other ways to get in, too. Meanwhile, the Giants and Phillies need to win and receive help elsewhere. In the American League, all eight playoff berths for this year’s expanded field are locked up. Minnesota wins the AL Central with a victory or a loss by the Chicago White Sox. It could all come down to the wire in a wild rush, with every meaningful game Sunday starting just after 3 p.m. Eastern time.
