Students, Alumni React to Clarke Program Eliminations

Current students and alumni from a Dubuque college are voicing their frustration over the school’s decision to eliminate several majors. Clarke University announced this week that it would be dropping a handful of academic programs, including religious studies, Spanish, musical theater, and art history. Administrators say the cuts are due to low enrollment in those programs. But both current students and alumni of the programs question whether the school had fully backed the programs. Megan Schumacher earned drama and speech degrees from Clarke, and now works with youth performers at Washington Middle School and Senior High School. She says Clarke choked off the theater programs with a lack of funding. Anna Kluesner is a senior in Clarke’s musical theater program and also questions the school’s support. In addition to eliminating the six major programs, Clarke will also stop awarding Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees.
