State Board: Dubuque Doctor Gave Drugs to Coworker He Was Having Sex With

A Dubuque doctor provided prescription drugs to a coworker he was having sex with. That’s the finding of the Iowa Board of Medicine, which has cited and fined Dr. Barry Waack. He practices emergency medicine at Finley Hospital, according to the hospital’s website. The state board released their findings late last week. Investigators say Waack gave multiple medications, including an antidepressant, to a female coworker he was having a sexual relationship with. In doing so, the board says Waack failed to establish an appropriate patient-physician relationship, perform examinations, or maintain records. Waack’s violations happened over a five-month stretch beginning in October of 2015. Waack has been cited for violating professional boundaries, as well as for improper prescribing. He’s been placed on probation for three years and ordered to pay a $5,000 fine. He’ll also have to reimburse the board for a monitoring system, something that could cost up to $2,400.
