Special Olympics Winter Games

For the 34th consecutive year, the Special Olympics Iowa Winter Games will be held in Dubuque today and tomorrow. Around 270 athletes will compete in alpine and cross country skiing, snowshoeing, speed skating and figure skating. Snowshoeing will also have a unified sports competition, which is when athletes with and without disabilities compete on the same team. Dubuque at-large city council member Ric Jones is a longtime supporter of the winter games and he says the games are one of the first major events of the year for the Key City. The summer games are held in Ames and Jones says the athletes look forward to both events. The opening ceremonies begin at 6 pm today at the Grand River Center and Jones’ band, the Upper Main Street Jazz Swing Band has played for every one of them. The Grand Harbor Resort, Mystique Community Ice Center, Sundown Mountain and Camp Albrecht Acres will play host to the various competitions and activities.
