Senior Apartment Manager Gets Probation

A Dubuque woman, who managed a senior apartment complex in Dubuque, has been sentenced to probation for stealing thousands of dollars from an elderly resident. Earlier this year 59 year old Janice Kay Schultz pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and was given five years of probation on Tuesday. Prosecutors say Schultz met the victim at the senior apartment complex she managed. In December of 2010 the victim was admitted to a nursing home after suffering a stroke and a fall. Afterwards the victim moved back to the apartment complex but her physical abilities had declined and she could no longer live at the complex and moved back to the nursing home. In April of 2011 the victim signed a power of attorney form that gave Schultz full authority to manage her financial affairs. For nearly 4 years, Schultz used that power of attorney to steal nearly $60,000 from the victim. Schultz used the money to buy Green Bay packer football tickets and pay for other personal expenses.  She also bought $24,000 in gift certificates that she used for a major home improvement project. Schultz was also ordered to pay the money back in restitution and repay $5,000 in court-appointed attorney fees.
