Scam Calls Increase in Dubuque Area

Scammers using the IRS to try to steal peoples’ personal information appear to have stepped up their efforts in the Dubuque area. According to Dubuque Police, more than 50 people reported receiving a phone call associated with the scam yesterday afternoon. Police say the call takes the form of an automated recording. It claims that a person has had charges filed against them by the IRS and will be arrested by “local cops” if the person doesn’t respond within 24 hours. Police urge those who received one of the calls to hang up immediately or delete the message if one is left. They also remind people that the IRS does not conduct enforcement operations by phone.
