Red Cross Announces 2019 “Everyday Heroes”
The founder of a nonprofit organization and four Good Samaritans are among the local heroes who will be honored by the American Red Cross. The organization has announced its 2019 recipients of the “Everyday Heroes of Northeast Iowa” honor. Among this year’s honorees are:
– Jim Deckert, who helped rescue the victim of a nearly fatal assault last spring. Deckert pulled the suspect off of the woman, who had been strangled and stabbed in the parking lot of a Dubuque convenience store.
– Jeremy Hillers and Philip Moser of Colesburg. The two men used quick thinking to rescue Hillers’ son after the tractor he was driving rolled over, pinning him.
– Angie Hohmann, who founded the Live Like Jack nonprofit after her young son died unexpectedly in November of 2014. The group provides support for children who have had siblings pass away. It also distributes “blessing bags” each Thanksgiving.
– Jaida Kramer, a University of Dubuque student who performed CPR and tended to a high school student that had been hit by a car.
The five honorees will be saluted at a breakfast next month.
