Progress Iowa: “We Need More Support For Medicaid”

Progress Iowa is calling on Iowa Senators Charles Grassley and Joni Ernst as well as Congress to provide a higher level of federal support for the state’s Medicaid program. The high rate of unemployment the state is experiencing because of the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed state Medicaid programs across the country to the brink and states now face looming budget shortfalls. State Senator Liz Mathis says states like Iowa will see a spike in unemployment numbers well into the final quarter of this year and those numbers will extend into next year. When Mathis was first elected to the Senate in 2011, she says there were around 500,000 Iowans enrolled in the Medicaid program. Those numbers are now well over 700,000. Since January of this year, over 50,000 people have enrolled in the program. Sue Dinsdale, with “Lower Drug Prices Now Iowa” says millions of Americans are going without the basics as the Senate delays a vote on the latest COVID relief and recovery package. Recently a group of Iowa advocates sent a letter to Ernst and Grassley urging them to tell the Trump administration to include enhanced funding for Medicaid in this latest  COVID-19 relief bill.
