UPDATE: Gym Teacher Had Cans of Alcohol at School, BAC Nearly Three Times Legal Limit

A Dubuque gym teacher is out of a job after being found with a blood alcohol content nearly three times the legal limit during the school day. 38-year-old Erin Ellerbach had been a physical education teacher at Jefferson Middle School until her arrest yesterday afternoon. School administrators called police at about 2:15 yesterday afternoon – a few minutes before students were dismissed – and said there was an intoxicated person on school grounds. An officer reports that Ellerbach showed several signs of intoxication, and a breath test registered her blood alcohol content at .224, almost three times the legal limit to drive. The report says school officials searched Ellerbach’s office and found one open can of what’s called “hard lemonade.” Two other unopened cans were also found. Ellerbach has been charged with Public Intoxication. A district spokesperson had initially said Ellerbach was placed on leave. They’re now saying Ellerbach is no longer employed by the district.
