Parents Give Dubuque Schools an “F” for Equity

A group of Dubuque parents gathered early yesterday morning to deliver a report card of sorts to the local school district. They say the district gets an “F” when it comes to student equity. The parents protested outside the district offices on Chaney Road. Their action came a day after a review showed ten Dubuque schools are not meeting requirements under the federal Every Student Succeeds Act. Derrick Clark has two kids who attend Prescott Elementary School, one of those ten. He says something has to change. Dubuque Schools Superintendent Stan Rheingans says he understands the parents’ concerns, and notes that the district has made improvements at some schools, such as Audubon Elementary. But he says the state could help by changing the way school funding is doled out. Rheingans says he’s open to exploring the possibility of redistricting, but worries that it might have the unintended consequence of pulling students away from the resources they need.
