Padres Designate Rea for Assignment

Rea

Cascade native Colin Rea was one of the casualties in a series of roster moves made by the San Diego Padres on Tuesday. That was the deadline for the Padres to protect some of their top minor league prospects from the Rule 5 draft. To make room for those players, the Padres traded or designated seven players. Rea was one of those designated for assignment. With that move, the Padres now have ten days to decide whether to return Rea to their 40-man roster, trade him, or release him. Rea was a 12th round draft pick of the Padres in 2011. He made his major league debut in August of 2015 and pitched for the Padres for much of the rest of that season and the first half of 2016. But an elbow injury required him to have Tommy John Surgery, and miss the entire 2017 season. He spent 2018 in the minor leagues, compiling a 3-5 record in 15 starts.
