One Killed in House Fire Near Sherrill

One person was killed and another seriously injured in a house fire in rural Dubuque County this week. According to the county sheriff’s office, the fire was reported at about 4:45 Wednesday afternoon. Firefighters and sheriff’s deputies were sent to a home on South Mound Road, about a mile and a half west of Sherrill. The home was already fully engulfed when crews arrived. Once the fire was put out, the body of 53-year-old Lisa Kloft was found inside. A resident of the home, 52-year-old John Ogelsby, was also injured in the fire. Janet Tekippe lives next door and says Ogelsby asked her to call 911 before running back into the house. Tekippe says she was rattled by what happened in what she describes as a typically quiet neighborhood. Ogelsby was initially taken to Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, then airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. His condition there is not known. The state fire marshal is now investigating the cause of the fire. Damage to the home is estimated at $150,000.
