No Bond For Accused Dubuque Murderer

A Dubuque County judge has denied bail for a Dubuque man charged in the shooting death of another Dubuque man earlier this month. 25 year old Deonte Ellison is charged with 1st degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm  in the shooting death of 26 year old Curtis Smothers on July 2nd near the intersection of Loras Blvd. and  Bluff Street. Ellison appeared via videoconference before Judge Robert Richter this morning. (Wednesday morning) after being extradited from Kalamazoo, Michigan where he was arrested by U.S. Marshals last Tuesday.  Traffic cameras captured the entire incident. After getting out of two separate vehicles, court documents say the two men got into a physical altercation, at which time Ellison pulled a gun from his waistband and fire a round into Smothers’ chest. He was transported to Mercy Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The footage also shows that 26 year old Vanessa Ellison and a young girl were near the scene during the shooting. Deonte Ellison is also charged with parole violation. He will next appear in court on July 31st.
