New Jail Approved For Delaware County

Voters in Delaware County have approved a 5.9 million dollar bond referendum for a new jail and sheriff’s office. The bond issue required a 60 percent super-majority to pass. There were two-thousand-167 yes votes or 85.5 percent, while 367 people voted no. County leaders say the current jail, which was built in 1967, is in bad shape and would likely not pass state inspections. If the referendum failed again, the state could have come and shut down the jail. The current jail can only hold about a dozen inmates leading to sheriff’s deputies having to spend time transporting prisoners to other nearby jails when numbers got too high. The new jail will house 38 inmates. The jail will be built near the industrial park on the southwest side of Manchester.
