Nats take NL pennant…Astros go up 2-1 on Yankees…Rams get Ramsey from Jaguars…Bears lose Hicks

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Washington Nationals have their first National League pennant after erupting for seven runs in the first inning to complete a four-game sweep of St. Louis, 7-4. Trea Turner led off the game with a hit, scored the first run and capped the Nats’ outburst with a two-run single. The Cardinals managed just six runs and 16 hits the entire series, allowing a Washington team advance to a World Series for the first time since the 1933 Senators.

NEW YORK (AP) – Gerrit Cole worked seven shutout innings and the Houston Astros took a two-games-to-one lead in the American League Championship Series with a 4-1 victory over the New York Yankees. Cole struck out seven and allowed four hits while improving to 3-0 with a 0.40 ERA in three starts this postseason. Jose Altuve and Josh Reddick belted solo homers to back Cole, who is 19-0 in 25 starts since a May 22 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) – The Jacksonville Jaguars have finally parted with Jalen Ramsey by sending the disgruntled cornerback to the Los Angeles Rams for first-round picks in 2020 and 2021, along with a fourth-round pick in 2021. Ramsey is one of the NFL’s elite defensive backs, earning two Pro Bowl selections and one first-team All-Pro nod in three seasons with Jaguars. The fifth overall pick in the 2016 draft has nine career interceptions along with innumerable conflicts with his coaches, the front office and the Jags’ opponents.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) – The Chicago Bears have put Pro Bowl defensive tackle Akiem Hicks on injured reserve, the latest blow on the injury front for a team trying to keep up in the NFC North. Hicks suffered an elbow injury Oct. 6 against the Oakland Raiders. Coach Matt Nagy had suggested Hicks might return this season, and putting him on IR allows the Bears to bring him back in eight weeks.

TORONTO (AP) – Canada has beaten the United States men’s soccer team for the first time in 34 years, getting second-half goals from Alphonso Davies and Lucas Cavallini for a 2-0 victory in the CONCACAF Nations League. The Americans hadn’t lost to Canada in 17 games and didn’t allow a goal in their previous four meetings. The 21st-ranked U.S. was coming off last week’s opening 7-0 home rout of Cuba.
