Hamels Sharp in Cubs Debut

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Cole Hamels won his Chicago Cubs debut and Willson Contreras went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBIs in a 9-2 thrashing of the Pirates in Pittsburgh. Hamels struck out nine while holding the Bucs to an unearned run and three hits over five innings. Ben Zobrist  and Jason Heyward also had three of Chicago’s 15 hits.


Brewers Fall in 10 to Dodgers

LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Chicago Cubs reclaimed first place in the NL Central when Milwaukee absorbed a 6-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Yasmani Grandal’s two-run, walk-off home run in the 10th inning. Grandal also homered in the fifth inning, one batter before Brian Dozier went deep in his Dodgers debut. The Brewers now sit one game behind Chicago, while the Dodgers are in a first-place tie with Arizona in the NL West.


Cardinals Double Up Rockies

ST.LOUIS (AP) – The Cardinals’ bullpen threw shutout ball over 6 1/3 innings of a 6-3 victory against Colorado. Yadier Molina drove in two runs and was one of three Redbirds with three hits. Nolan Arenado collected his 80th RBI for the Rockies, who are one game off the NL West lead.


White Soxs Slammed in KC

CHICAGO (AP)  – Alex Gordon hit a two-run homer and drove in four in leading the Royals’ 10-5 rout of the White Sox. Jakob Junis pitched 5 2/3 innings of four-run ball in his first win since May 18. Yoan Moncada broke out of a slump with his fifth career leadoff homer, two hits and two walks, but he also committed one of two costly errors for the White Sox.


Twins Blanked by Indians

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The Cleveland Indians have pushed their lead in the American League Central to 10 games by blanking the second-place Twins, 2-0 in Minnesota. Carlos Carrasco won his fifth straight decision by striking out 10 and limiting the Twins to four hits over 7 1/3 innings. Brad Hand recorded the final five outs for the Indians, who have allowed just 13 runs over their last six games.
