McKean Proposes Expanding Deposit Law to Coffee, Water Containers

Iowans would be able to get money back for recycling plastic coffee and water containers under a bill proposed by a Tri-State area lawmaker. State Representative Andy McKean of Anamosa has proposed expanding the state’s bottle deposit law to include containers for coffee, tea, and water. The current law only applies to soda and beer containers. McKean’s bill would also boost the handling fee that redemption centers are paid to handle the recycled containers. Those businesses currently charge beverage distributors one cent per container. The bill would double that to two cents each. McKean represents House District 56, which includes all of Jackson County and the southwestern corner of Dubuque County.
