Maquoketa Man Charged With Homicide

A Maquoketa man faces a homicide charge after police say he was driving drunk in a fatal car crash that killed his passenger nearly a year ago. Online court records from Delaware County say 21 year old Andy Ahrens is charged with homicide by vehicle-operating under the influence. Documents say shortly before 12:30 pm on October 7th, Ahrens was driving on U.S. Highway 52, just south of Bellevue, when he lost control. His vehicle left the road and smashed into a tree and caught fire. His passenger, 20 year old Alex Behr of Sabula was pronounced dead at the scene. Ahrens was transported to Mercy Hospital and treated for his injuries. Authorities drew blood from Ahrens and it showed that his blood alcohol content was 0.21 percent, more than two-and-a-half times the legal limit at the time of the crash. His next scheduled court appearance is today.
