Man Who Tried to Run Over Rival Gets Ten Years in Prison

A Bellevue man who crashed into a downtown Dubuque church while trying to run over another man with his truck is headed to prison. 35-year-old Eric Schmidt was given a ten-year prison sentence in Dubuque County Court on Monday. Back in February, Schmidt cut a deal with prosecutors to plead guilty to charges of Going Armed with Intent and 1st Degree Criminal Mischief. In exchange, an Attempted Murder charge was dropped. According to prosecutors, Schmidt and another man had been engaged in a feud that came to a head in May of last year. That’s when Schmidt spotted the man walking in the 12-hundred block of Main Street. Schmidt drove his pickup truck at the man, colliding with the concrete steps in front of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in the process. The crash caused several thousand dollars in damage to the church.
