Man Charged With Assault After Racial Incident

A Dubuque man, who will be back in court today was arrested Friday after police say he yelled out a racial slur at a group of people and then pointed and fired off a roman candle at the group. Court documents say 48 year old John Daniel is charged with assault while displaying a dangerous weapon and violation of individual rights. The incident happened in early July in the 2300 block of Central Avenue. A group of people, including a 15 year old boy were shooting off fireworks in the area, when Daniel allegedly shouted a racial slur at the boy and told them to stop. The boy went inside an apartment and came back out with his mother, who asked Daniel to talk to her about the slur. Documents say Daniel refused to talk to the woman, flipped her off and shot a roman candle towards the woman and others. No one was injured as the group fled back into the apartment. After being questioned by police, Daniel admitted to shooting off the roman candle, but says he wasn’t intentionally trying to hit anyone.
