Local Democrats Cite Concerns at Listening Session

A trio of Democrat state lawmakers from Dubuque were among the elected officials on hand for what was called a “listening session” at Loras College on Sunday. State Representatives Lindsay James and Chuck Isenhart and State Senator Pam Jochum were each in attendance, as were several county officials. Democrats will once again be completely out of power in the upcoming Iowa legislative session, as Republicans control the House, Senate, and the Governor’s office. Isenhart says that means Democrats will have to work hard to show Republican policies aren’t working. Senator Jochum expects a combative session, with tensions from the national political climate spilling over to the Statehouse. Jochum says lawmakers on both sides of the aisle need citizens to tell them what is and isn’t working. Republican legislators Shannon Lundgren, Andy McKean, and Carrie Koelker were invited to participate in the forum, but weren’t able to make it.
