Layoffs At Diamond Jo Inevitable

No one knows exactly what the lingering effects of COVID-19 will have on the local economy, but for one of Dubuque’s casinos, the future of some of its’ employees hangs in the balance. Boyd Gaming, the parent company of the Diamond Jo recently sent a letter to Mayor Roy Buol indicating that between 25 and 60 percent of its’ workers will lose their jobs. At its’ peak the Diamond Jo employs around 450 people. Mayor Buol says the company gave him a range of 110 to 270 employees that could have their jobs permanently eliminated. Buol realizes the struggle that lies ahead for gaming facilities, hospitality and entertainment industries. Both the Diamond Jo and Q Casinos have had to scale back on some of their offerings in order to maintain a safe environment for their customers and their staffs. The Mayor says there’s a lot of uncertainty looking ahead over the next six months as to when casinos will be able to offer full services again. Boyd plans to announce how many workers will be affected at the Diamond Jo  sometime before mid-July. At this time, Q Casino has no plans to permanently eliminate positions.
