Jackson Jail Vote Fails

Voters in Jackson County have again rejected a bond issue for a new jail. The 6.5 million dollar referendum needed 60-percent majority approval, but only received 57.5-percent. A total of 1,862 registered voters cast yes ballots, while 1,525 voted no. Last year voters rejected a similar referendum. Members of the county board of supervisors have been pushing to have a new jail built for several years. They say the current jail is outdated and has a number of deficiencies as well as safety concerns. The referendum called for the new 50 bed jail to be built on Main Street. In an unrelated issue voters chose a new auditor. Alisa Smith is the new Jackson County auditor. She replaces Brain Moore who resigned.
