Italian Sausage Grinders
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 medium yellow onion, chopped finely
1 red bell pepper, chopped finely
1 teaspoon garlic powder
2 lb. Cremer’s Italian Sausage
1 lb. Cremer’s lean ground beef
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
1 24 oz. jar or can of Spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce or marinara
1 ½ lbs. mozzarella cheese, sliced (at least 16 slices)
8 brat buns or hoagie buns
Preheat oven to 450-degrees F.
In a large pan under medium heat, add a couple tablespoons butter or margarine. Sauté chopped onion and red bell pepper for 2 minutes. Remove from pan and set aside. Add Italian sausage, ground beef, garlic powder and Italian seasoning. Stir and cook until browned. Remove from heat and drain off excess fat. Add onion/red bell pepper mixture and stir. Set aside.
Spray a large baking sheet with cooking spray. Slice brat or hoagie buns and place on baking dish. Make sure buns are slightly open. Place a slice of mozzarella cheese into the bottom of each bun. Add some of the meat mixture to the inside of each of the buns.
Layer meat filled buns with some of the spaghetti sauce and top with another slice of mozzarella cheese. Place in oven and bake for 12-15 minutes until cheese is melted and slightly browned. Remove from oven and serve warm.
