Iowa Traffic Fatalities Hit 70 Year Low

Fewer people died on Iowa’s roadways in 2018 than in any year since World War II. That’s according to data released by the state Department of Transportation. The agency’s preliminary numbers show there were 315 traffic fatalities in Iowa in 2018. That’s the lowest number of deaths since at least 1944. It’s also down by about 4% from 2017. But the number can still go even lower. The DOT says about one-third of the people who died in 2018 weren’t wearing seat belts. Local law enforcement agencies still have a few days to report fatal crashes that happened in 2018’s final days, so the number of traffic fatalities could rise slightly.
