Iowa Sees First Death of Flu Season as Cases Rise

Flu cases in Iowa appear to be on the rise, and the state has now seen its first death from the flu this season. The Iowa Department of Public Health hasn’t released much information about the death, but does say that the person was a middle-aged man from eastern Iowa who had an underlying medical condition. His death comes as flu cases in Iowa are now being rated as “regional,” which is the second most severe classification. Gail Gates is the Infection Preventionist at Mercy Hospital here in Dubuque. She says the two best ways to fight the flu are to get a vaccine and practice good hygiene. In Dubuque County, only about one percent of flu tests are coming back positive.
