Illinois Special Olympics

Last month hundreds of athletes competed in the Iowa Special Olympics Winter Games in Dubuque. This week it’s time for the athletes in Illinois to carrying the torch. More than 450 athletes from across the state will gather in Galena at Chestnut Mountain Resorts to compete in the games which start tomorrow  and run through Thursday. They’ll be competing in alpine skiing and snowshoeing. Mike Murphy is co-owner of Chestnut Mountain. Murphy says the slopes at Chestnut are holding up very well this season. The public is invited and encouraged to attend the winter games, and they could always use more volunteers. Opening ceremonies and a parade of athletes will be in downtown Galena beginning at 5:30 tomorrow evening.  A fireworks display will take place at the end of the ceremony. Chestnut  Mountain has been home to the winter games for more than 35 years.
