Illinois Man Sentenced For Removing Evidence

A Rockford man who removed evidence from an opioid overdose death scene at a Dubuque hotel, instead of calling 911, has been sentenced to nearly two years in federal prison. 29 year old Mateusz Syryjczyk pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of misprision of a felony. Authorities say Syryjczyk and his girlfriend and another person went to a resident in Dubuque in May of last year to purchase heroin. They then went to a hotel in Dubuque where they all used the drug. The third person began to overdose in the room. Syryjczyk and his girlfriend did not immediately call 911, but over the course of several hours the girlfriend would occasionally perform CPR, but the person never regained consciousness. When they finally decided to call 911, the two removed the rest of the drug paraphernalia from the room before police arrived. The person was pronounced dead at the scene.
