Hempstead Senior Accepted to West Point

A Dubuque high school student will attend the US Military Academy. Jack Gehl will graduate from Hempstead High School this spring. He’s due to leave for West Point on July 1. Gehl is a member of the Hempstead wrestling team, and just missed out on qualifying for the State Tournament last year as a junior. He was also selected by his classmates to be a member of the school’s Homecoming court last fall. In order to even be considered for acceptance into West Point, students must achieve above-average academic rankings, including grade point average and standardized test scores. They’re also required to have taken a rigorous class schedule, including four years of English, an advanced math class, and two years of a foreign language. Applicants are also required to be nominated by a Congressional Representative or US Senator.
