Hawkeyes Pound Illini in Big 10 Tourney Opener…..Cyclones Soar to Big 12 Semi’s

Baer scores 17 points as Iowa beats Illinois 83-62

CHICAGO (AP) – Nicholas Baer made five of Iowa’s 12 3-pointers and scored 17 points, helping the Hawkeyes pull away from Illinois for an 83-62 victory on Thursday in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament.  Iowa turned up its play in the second half to stop a four-game losing streak and hand coach Fran McCaffery his first win since he returned Sunday after a two-game suspension . The Hawkeyes went 12 for 23 from beyond the arc and turned 15 Illini turnovers into 24 points.  It was a similar performance to their meeting in the regular season, when Iowa shot 68 percent from the field in a 95-71 victory over Illinois on Jan. 20.Next up for the Hawkeyes (22-10) is No. 10 Michigan on tonight.

The other quarters: Ohio State vs top seed Michigan State at 11:30 followed by #4 seed Wisconsin against Nebraska, and Minnesota vs 2nd seed Purdue


Horton-Tucker leads Iowa State past Baylor 83-66 in Big 12

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Talen Horton-Tucker hit five 3-pointers and scored 21 points and fifth-seeded Iowa State shot past fourth-seeded Baylor 83-66 in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament on Thursday.   The Cyclones (21-11) also had key contributions from Marial Shayok who had 18 with four 3-pointers, and Lindell Winginton with 16 points.   Iowa State faces top-seeded Kansas State in the semifinals on tonight at 6 o’clock followed by West Virginia vs Kansas in the other semi-final.
