Grassley Becomes Senate President Pro Tem

Iowa’s senior US Senator is now third in line to the presidency. Senator Charles Grassley yesterday was sworn in as the Senate President Pro Tempore after receiving unanimous approval from his colleagues. According to the Constitution, the Senate President Pro Tem sits behind only the Vice President and the Speaker of the House in the line of presidential succession. Historically, President Pro Tem is a position given to the longest-serving member of the Senate’s majority party. Grassley has been serving in the Senate since 1981. He takes over the President Pro Tem position from former Utah Senator Orrin Hatch, who did not seek re-election last year.
