Grant County Fatal Crash

A rural Potosi man died in a two vehicle crash Friday morning. Around 5:45 a.m., the Grant County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an accident on Hwy 35/61 near Kelly Lane located in the Township of Paris. 28-year old Tyler Clauer, from rural Potosi, was traveling southbound when he lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a downhill curve to the right. Clauer’s vehicle crossed into the northbound lanes and struck the guardrail on the east side of the roadway and slid downhill. At the same time, 34-year old Daniel Kieler, from rural Hazel Green, was traveling northbound on Hwy 35/61 when he struck Clauer’s vehicle on its driver’s side. Kieler was able to get out of his vehicle and was transported to Southwest Health Center in Platteville for non-life threatening injuries. After being extricated from his vehicle, Clauer was transported to Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, where he later succumbed to his injuries sustained in the crash. Kieler was wearing a safety belt. Clauer was not wearing his safety belt. This matter is still under investigation as speed, dense fog conditions and a wet roadway may be contributing factors in the crash.
