Former Shopko Employee Joins Movement

A Dubuque woman is one of hundreds of former Shopko employees demanding severance pay after losing their jobs. Trina McInerney joined the efforts of United for Respect, a non-profit based in Washington D C. It brings retail workers together to improve working conditions. The private equity firm Sun Capital bought Shopko in 2005, and it closed all Shopko stores this year. Now McInerney and about 700 other former Shopko employees are demanding that Sun Capital set up a fund to pay employees for losing their jobs. McInerney blames that firm for Shopko’s closure and she tells our coverage partners at KCRG it needs to compensate 14,000 former employees. McInerney is still looking for a new job. In the meantime she has gone to Washington DC to advocate for a bill to limit what equity firms can do when they take over struggling companies.
