FIDO Lobbies For New Dog Park

A local group of “dog lovers” want to see a second dog park in Dubuque. Friendly Intelligent Dog Owners of Dubuque, or FIDO have created an online petition to get a new dog park at the Port of Dubuque. FIDO President Lisa Johnson says a recent assessment concluded that Dubuque has a lot of work to do to make it a more “pet friendly” community. That assessment will be reviewed by the city council at its’ meeting on Monday. Being a “pet friendly” community is a high priority for the council. Johnson says her group’s main focus is promoting responsible dog ownership. Along with that she says a second dog park in Dubuque is long overdue.  Johnson and her group envision a second dog park on an ideal piece of city owned property at the Port. The park would also include a place for kids to play and a picnic area for families and groups. Johnson encourages people to go online and sign their petition. Johnson says they could raise money for the park, much like the supporters of the new skate park did. The city council is expected to bring up the issue during its’ goal setting session on August 13th at the Grand River Center.
