A student at one of Dubuque’s colleges was killed in a crash along US Highway 20 near Independence. According to the Iowa State Patrol, 22-year-old Bailey DeVries died after losing control of her vehicle and crossing into oncoming traffic. The crash report says she was driving east on Highway 20 at about 6:15 Tuesday night when her car slid across the median and into the path of a semi. She was pronounced dead at the scene. DeVries was a student at Emmaus Bible College in Dubuque. An online posting from the school indicates that DeVries was returning to campus from her hometown in western Iowa at the time of the crash. In addition to being a student, it says she was also a member of the National Guard and had recently been assigned as a chaplain’s assistant.
