Dubuquers Hurt In Crash In Des Moines

Two Dubuque residents were injured in a three vehicle crash near Principal Park in Des Moines following Hempstead’s 7-to-6 baseball win over Iowa City High Wednesday night. The accident involved family of head Mustangs baseball coach Jeff Rapp. Des Moines police say at around 7:40, a vehicle driven by 26 year old Fahid Chaudhry of Des Moines was traveling south of Southwest 3rd Street approaching Line Drive, when reached down to grab his cell phone. As he was looking down, Chaudhry told police he swerved off the road, jumped the curb and struck a legally parked vehicle owned by James Beining of Dubuque. The impact caused Beining’s vehicle to smash into another legally parked vehicle owned by Steven Burgett of Des Moines. Two people inside Beining’s vehicle, 67 year old Joan Rannals and 41 year old Alicia Engelking, both of Dubuque were injured. They were transported to Methodist Hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries. Rannals is coach  Rapp’s mother-in-law and Engelking is his sister-in-law. Chaudhry was cited for failure to maintain control
