Dubuque Tourism Officials Make Push to Host RAGBRAI

Dubuque tourism leaders will have their attention in Des Moines this weekend, as they wait to find out if the Key City will be included in an annual bicycle ride across Iowa. The route for the annual Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa, or RAGBRAI, will be announced on Saturday evening. The last time Dubuque hosted RAGBRAI was in 2010, and local officials are ready for that drought to be over. Travel Dubuque Director of Sports and Events Tyler Daugherty says Dubuque has put in a bid to host RAGBRAI for the first time in several years. Daugherty rates Dubuque’s odds of landing RAGBRAI as 50/50‚Ķeither it will or it won’t. But he believes having gone nine years since the ride’s last visit does work in Dubuque’s favor. One factor that could have a significant bearing on the success of Dubuque’s bid is the level of interest from nearby communities that could host the ride the days before it comes into Dubuque. The nine-year stretch since Dubuque last hosted RAGBRAI is not the city’s longest time without the ride. Prior to ending in Dubuque in 2010, RAGBRAI had last come to town 17 years earlier, in 1993. Dubuque has also been RAGBRAI’s ending city in 1974 and 1983.
