Dubuque Schools Hire Equity Director
The Dubuque school district has its first equity director. The school board approved the hiring of Taj Suleyman at its meeting on Monday night. The position was created in hopes of leveling the playing field for students across the district. Suleyman says he’ll start his work by simply getting to know the district, its buildings, and what issues need to be addressed. One parent who’s been critical of the district’s efforts to this point is praising Suleyman’s hiring. Christine Darr, who has two kids, says the addition of an Equity Director is a good step. Darr is especially concerned about Dubuque’s Title 1 schools. Those are the schools that receive federal funding because of high numbers of kids on free and reduced lunches. Suleyman comes to the school district after working as an Equity Outreach Coordinator for the city of Dubuque. He’s held that job since early 2016.
