Dubuque Police Officer Lawsuit

Questions are being raised about possible gaps in how sexual harrassment is tracked in Dubuque city government. A lawsuit was filed last week by Captain Abigail Simon against the city and its police chief Mark Dalsing, claiming discrimination and sexual harassment. Our coverage partners at KCRG TV reports Simon’s complaints were not included in the records the City gave the station last year. Dubuque City Manager Michael Van Milligen told KCRG TV that he believes the city responded to the request appropriately, but did not elaborate. According to KCRG, they have obtained emails between Simon and city officials, including Van Milligen, that show the city knew of at least one other complaint over a seven year period than the one they reported. The emails from Simon to city officials describe a fellow officer talking about his plans to Google “boob jobs” after a female city employee went on medical leave. Other complaints involves the police chief allegedly using derogatory language to describe pink colored hats and Simon’s claim that a fellow officer used racist language.
