Dubuque Native Bakey Receiving Golden Plaque 

A Dubuque native has been named as the recipient of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Golden Plaque of Distinction Award. Tom Bakey, head coach at West Des Moines Valley will be honored prior to the start of the Class 5-A state championship game next Friday at Rogers’ Sports Complex in Fort Dodge.

Bakey is in his 32nd season with the Valley softball program; the last 22 seasons serving as the program’s head coach. Bakey began his coaching career with the Tigers in 1984, followed by moves to Oskaloosa and Saydel before returning to West Des Moines Valley in 1994.

During his 22 year varsity softball coaching career, Bakey has compiled a record of 827 wins and 201 losses, winning five state titles in 13 state tournament appearances and 16 conference championships.

Prior to stepping into a coaching role, he played and pitched men’s major open fast-pitch for 19 years and is a member of the Iowa ASA Hall of Fame as a player.
