Dubuque Man Sentenced To 25 Years

A Dubuque man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for shooting another man during a disturbance on the city’s north end in June. 37 year old Frederick Bateast pleaded guilty to willful injury and being a habitual offender in possession of a firearm. He was originally charged with attempted murder. The incident happened on the night of June 16th in the 2400 block of White Street. When police arrived, witnesses told them someone had been shot and was taken to the hospital. The victim was later identified as 35 year old Ricardo Thomas. He had been shot in the back as he ran away following an altercation with another man. Investigators used traffic camera footage to identify Bateast as the shooter. He later turned himself in at the law enforcement center. Thomas survived the shooting following surgery.
