Dubuque Man sentenced For Beating Woman

A Dubuque man who was accused of beating and choking a woman in 2018 is going to prison. Court documents from Cedar Rapids say 28 year old Charles Carter was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison after pleading guilty last August to possessing a firearm as a convicted domestic abuser. In August of 2018 police discovered a gun while investigating a domestic incident involving Carter. Carter had struck a woman in the face and arms causing red marks, swelling, bruising and pain. He then grabbed a towel rack and struck the woman in the face, which caused a red bump on her eyebrow. Carter then choked the woman causing her to blackout and then hit her with a belt. When police arrived they found Carter hiding in the trunk of the victim’s car. Police also found a gun in Carter’s dresser draw in the residence where the assault took place. He admitted the gun was his. Carter was prohibited from having firearms because of two prior convictions for domestic abuse. When he is released, Carter will be placed on three years of probation.
